Choosing Professional Installation

Installing a heat pump water heater is more complex and takes longer than a standard electric resistance water heater. That’s why BGE has partnered with local contractors to provide you with a fixed-price installation option through this platform.

If you’re interested in a heat pump water heater and whether you may qualify for a fixed-price installation, take our quick interactive survey:

Benefits

Did you know that water heating comprises about 20% of your household’s annual energy consumption? An ENERGY STAR certified heat pump water heater uses 70% less energy than standard electric water heaters, which can help you save hundreds annually.

How else does a heat pump water heater stack up to a standard electric resistance unit?

Household Size Annual kWh Savings Annual $ Savings Payback (Years) Lifetime Savings
2 1,880 $270 5.5 $2,050
3 2,820 $410 3.7 $3,830
4 3,760 $550 2.7 $5,610
Assumes: $.146 cents/kWh; Incremental Cost* = $1,503; 13-year lifespan. Cost and energy savings information based on estimates from the U.S EPA's ENERGY STAR program.
*The incremental cost is the cost differential between the heat pump water heater and a standard water heater.

Here are a few other benefits to using a heat pump water heater:

More hot water. HPWHs have a higher first hour rating than standard electric resistance water heaters, which means they can provide you with more hot water in the same amount of time.
Conditions your space. They can help dehumidify the room they are installed in and thrive in humid conditions.
Reliable. Heat pump water heaters provide the same reliable service that your standard water heater does. There is no sacrifice or trade off in the amount of hot water you can access when you upgrade your existing unit.

Installation Considerations

Installation Location: Because heat pump water heaters generate a small amount of noise and cool air, they are better suited to basements and utility closets than living spaces. For optimum efficiency, units should be installed in climate-controlled rooms 10x10 or larger.
Condensate: Heat pump water heaters generate a small amount of pure water that must be plumbed to a sink or drain.
Tank Size: Make sure your home has access to the right amount of hot water: it will improve the efficiency of your unit and ensure your needs are met. How much hot water do you need? It all depends on how many people are in your household.
Tank Size # of people in your house # of daily 8-minute showers
50-gallon 3-5 4
65-gallon 4-6 5
80-gallon 6+ 6

You may want to consider a higher capacity tank size depending on your household’s hot water use habits.

Maintenance: Air filters must be rinsed regularly. If you are planning to take extended trips, be sure to put your unit into "vacation" mode to conserve energy while you're away from home.
